January 14, 2014 Board Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m.

ROLL CALL:  Present - Dee & Bob Hightower, Andy Kearney, Louie & Paulette Walters.  Absent - Lito Castillo, Jose’ Castillo, Mike Mason, & Tom Reese.

Secretary: Paulette Walters read the minutes of the board meeting 11/12/13; minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer’s Report: Dee Hightower’s report below & accepted subject to audit.

Correspondence:  none.

Officer Reports: President/Curator Louie Walters reported the Ajo Museum was open 87 days from 10/18/13 – 1/12/14. Volunteer Guide days: Jose’ Castillo 33, Andy Kearney 23, Mike Mason 1, Jim Mitchell 2, Tom Reese 4, Pete Leitzman 1, & Louie Walters 80. Visitors 559, slowest of the last six – 628 in 2013, 719 in 2012, 555 in 2011 (only open 67 days by Jan. 12); average of $1.39 per visitor this season. The clips for the flag were stolen & have been replaced. The phone quit working, but has been repaired. A water hose was removed.

Vice-President Mike Mason – no report.

Committee Reports:

  1. Fund Raising – 200 postcards purchased.
  2. Building committee – 2” rainfall in Nov. & roof leaked in military exhibit; roof had been fiberglass patched. Ajo Garden Club cleanup & drip system repair Jan. 16th. Paint touch up handled by Andy Kearney. Flagpole rope stuck; replace with major help from Andy.
  3. Publicity – two recent items including Christmas ad. E-mailed Charlie Tapp old photos regarding Christmas & plaza in Ajo.
  4. Library – over 2400 obituaries, 1100+ other documents on file. Over 700 mini biographies of Ajo area people who served in World War II. While not many, family researchers have made generous donations.
  5. Donated items – 1916 photo of Olding family in front of tent house emailed by Sally Olding Renee. Xerox photo of the 1926 Cornelia Juvenil Banda/Cornelia Youth Band with people identified & 1928 musical march dedicated to Mike Curley donated by Ruth Mota. Sue Rutman emailed information about Filiberto Quintero, composer of music & Ajo youth bandmaster. Combination locks, classroom & other keys, set of blueprints for Curley School donated by Jack Darnell. Dee Hightower donated 8 jars of homemade cactus jelly. Dr. Sokol may donate steam hoist this spring, subject to board approval.

Old Business: Bathroom handicap rail was purchased; assembled by Andy Kearney.

New Business: roof & tile repair tabled until March. Term expiration of all officers of the board March, 2014; board members Bob & Dee Hightower & Tom Reese terms expire the end of 2014.

Membership Applications: A new application received from Steven Oehlerking for a life membership; Dee made a motion to accept the life membership application from Steven; seconded by Bob; motion passed.

Annual General Meeting: Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Next Board Meeting: follows the General Meeting on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Announcements:  Dues are now due.

Dee made motion to adjourn, seconded by Bob; meeting adjourned at 6:53 p.m.
